Separately Managed Accounts, or SMAs as they are more commonly known, have gained enormous market momentum since the GFC due to their transparency, flexibility and better tax management.
According to a CLSA Asia-Pacific June 2010 report: "Some planners are seeing the growth of ETFs, developments in the managed accounts market and increasing demand for direct shares as a catalyst to re-evaluate their advice business model. Some of the more progressive boutique planner groups are seeing this as an opportunity to expand their advice margin while lowering the overall fee to customers."
